In addition to fighting the USFWS’s listing of the dunes sagebrush lizard, PBPA is preparing to ward off the potential listing of the Lesser Prairie Chicken, whose habitat ranges from Kansas to the southern tip of the Permian Basin.
There are a multitude of other creatures in shale plays that continue to be placed on various listings.
The Lesser Prairie Chicken, Tympanuchus pallidicinctus, a species in the grouse family, is slightly smaller and paler than its near relative the Greater Prairie Chicken. It is found primarily in the sandhills and prairies of Western Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, and the Permian Basin of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, and also rarely in Southeastern Colorado, and Western Kansas.
